The Vandercook No. 3 is a simplified version of the No. 4. One of the things that it is missing is a foot pedal to open the grippers; instead you just have to move the carriage to the right position next to the feed board. This is a little fussy, but replacing a short bar in the gripper assembly with a long handle allows the press operator to open the grippers by pulling on the handle.
